Heads Up

Description

Students get into pairs and get a set of flashcards, and a timer is set for ~2 minutes. Student A holds the cards to face their pair. Student B asks the question, and A guesses what their own card is using the answer. They get 3 tries before they discard that card face up. If they guess correctly, they get one point, and go to the next flashcard. Students guess until the timer goes off. Pairs then switch and play again.

Notes

  • This game hasn’t been tested out yet. If you try it, please let me know how it went!
  • This could also be a good vocab review for a first game or warm up game, where students just guess the word instead of doing the question/answer.
  • The idea is it gets easier to guess the flashcard the more cards they get through, although it may result in students not using the full Q/A.

Example round:

A: *holds card facing away from them*
B: “What do you want?”
A: “I want a….book?”
B: “No! What do you want?”
A: “I want a…game!”
B: “Yes! 1 point.”

Hey Rose, this looks interesting to me, but I'm not sure I understand the fine details 100%. Is it possible that you could add an example of how one round would go? A holds the cards, but B asks questions, and then A has to guess based on, whose answer?

Hey Chris, I don't see a way to edit my post, so I'll comment. Student A would be guessing randomly what their own card is, which they can't see. Therefore, it would be based on memory. Of course, they would also be able to look at the vocab on the board. For example: A: *holds cards where they can't see the word/picture, but B can* B: "What do you want?" A: *hmm, what card am I holding?* "I want a....bicycle!" B: "No! What do you want?" A: *guessing* "I want a...soccer ball!" B: Yes! 1 point. *Repeat until time is up* This is based on the official game Heads Up, so you could also get an idea of how it would work by looking that up! Apologies if my explanation is still poor.

The formatting of my comment seems to be lost in posting...apologies

Sorry, comment formatting only accepts plain text at the moment, but I will try and update it to allow paragraphs etc. soon!

Ah, I see now. Student A is using the target grammar question to try and guess what they're holding. Thanks for clearing it up! I was thinking the questions were being asked to try and get hints at the card they're holding. :)
